✧ I asked 'Alqamah, "Did Ibn Mas'ud attend the Night of the Jinn with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" 'Alqamah said, "I asked Ibn Mas'ud, 'Did any of you attend the Night of the Jinn with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said, 'No, but we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night and lost him. We searched for him in the valleys and mountain passes and said, "He has been taken up or assassinated." He said, "We spent the worst night any people ever spent." When morning came, he came from the direction of Hira'. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we lost you and searched for you but did not find you, so we spent the worst night any people ever spent." He said, "A caller from the jinn came to me, and I went with him and recited the Qur'an to them." He said, "He took us and showed us their fires. They asked him for provision, so he said, 'You will have every bone upon which the name of Allah has been mentioned, falling into your hands with as much meat as possible, and every piece of dung as fodder for your animals.'" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "So do not cleanse yourselves with bones or dung, for they are the provision of your brothers among the jinn.""

machine translationDāwūd b. Abī Hind narrates it from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh; a group of Kufans and Basrans narrated it from him. The Basrans made the words "and they asked him for provision" to the end of the hadith the statement of al-Shaʿbī, as a mursal report. As for Yaḥyā b. Abī Zāʾidah and others of the Kufans, they inserted it (idrāj) into the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd from the Prophet ﷺ. The correct view is that of those who separated it, for it is the speech of al-Shaʿbī as a mursal report.
