Abdullah ibn AbuBakr reported that he heard Urwah say: I entered upon Marwan ibn al-Hakam. We mentioned things that render the ablution void. Marwan said: Does it become void by touching the penis? Urwah replied: This I do not know. Marwan said: Busrah daughter of Safwan reported to me that she heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: He who touches his penis should perform ablution. What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • al-Bukhari

machine translationOf the hadiths on performing ablution after touching the private part, the soundest is the hadith of Busrah.

  • Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn

machine translationI said to Yaḥyā: Which report is authentic regarding touching the private part? He said: The ḥadīth of Mālik, from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Bakr, from ʿUrwah, from Marwān, from Busrah, for he says in it, "I heard." Were it not for this, I would have said that nothing is authentic on the matter.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationEveryone who compiled a Ṣaḥīḥ mentioned the hadith of Busrah on this topic and the hadith of Ṭalq b. ʿAlī, except al-Bukhārī, for in his view the two conflict and are defective (maʿlūl), while in the view of others both are sound (ṣaḥīḥ). And Allah is the one whose help is sought.

  • Mubarakpūri

machine translationThe hadith of Busrah is more firmly established, stronger and more preponderant than the hadith of Ṭalq.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationIt is necessary for al-Bukhārī to have recorded it, for he has recorded its like.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationI said to Yaḥyā: Which report is authentic regarding touching the private part? He said: The ḥadīth of Mālik, from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Bakr, from ʿUrwah, from Marwān, from Busrah, for he says in it, "I heard." Were it not for this, I would have said that nothing is authentic on the matter.

  • Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn

machine translationMuḍar b. Muḥammad narrated: I asked Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn about touching the private part, which report is most authentic on it. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: Were it not for the ḥadīth of Mālik, from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Bakr, from ʿUrwah, from Marwān, from Busrah, for he says in it, "I heard," I would have said that nothing is authentic.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationAbū Dāwūd said: I said to Aḥmad, "The hadith of Busrah is not sound." He said: "Rather, it is sound."

  • al-Tirmidhi

    machine translationAuthentic (ṣaḥīḥ), established.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationYaḥyā b. Maʿīn also declared it sound (ṣaḥīḥ), as Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr related, as did Abū Ḥāmid b. al-Sharqī, al-Bayhaqī and al-Ḥāzimī.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationAlthough the two Shaykhs did not record this hadith because of a disagreement over whether ʿUrwah heard it from her or from Marwān, they both relied on all of its narrators, and al-Bukhārī relied on Marwān b. al-Ḥakam in several hadiths, so it meets al-Bukhārī's condition in any case.

  • Mubarakpūri

machine translationThe preferred and relied-upon position is that the hadith of Busrah and the hadith of Ṭalq are both sound (ṣaḥīḥ), but her hadith is sounder, more established and more preponderant than his, as you learned earlier.
