حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْأَوْدِيِّ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَتْنِي بِنْتُ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ:
أَنَّ أَبَاهَا ثَقُلَ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ ابْنَ زِيَادٍ، فَجَاءَ يَعُودُهُ فَجَلَسَ فَعَرَفَ فِيهِ الْمَوْتَ فَقَالَ لَهُ: يَا مَعْقِلُ ! أَلَا تُحَدِّثُنَا، فَقَدْ كَانَ اللهُ يَنْفَعُنَا بِأَشْيَاءَ نَسْمَعُهَا مِنْكَ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: لَيْسَ مِنْ وَالٍ يَلِي أُمَّةً قَلَّتْ أَوْ كَثُرَتْ لَمْ يَعْدِلْ فِيهِمْ إِلَّا كَبَّهُ اللهُ لِوَجْهِهِ فِي النَّارِ. فَأَطْرَقَ الْأَخَرُ سَاعَةً فَقَالَ: شَيْءٌ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، أَوْ مِنْ وَرَاءَ وَرَاءَ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، بَلْ شَيْءٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنِ اسْتُرْعِيَ رَعِيَّةً فَلَمْ يُحِطْهُمْ بِنَصْحِهِ [١]لَمْ يَجِدْ رِيحَ الْجَنَّةِ، وَرِيحُهَا يُوجَدُ مِنْ مَسِيرَةِ مِائَةِ عَامٍ. قَالَ [٢]ابْنُ زِيَادٍ: أَلَا كُنْتَ حَدَّثْتَنِي بِهَذَا قَبْلَ الْآنَ ؟ قَالَ: وَالْآنَ لَوْلَا مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ لَمْ أُحَدِّثْكَ بِهَا

That her father became gravely ill, and news of that reached Ibn Ziyād, so he came to visit him. He sat down and recognized death in him. He said to him: "O Maʿqil! Will you not narrate to us? For Allah used to benefit us through things we heard from you." He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'There is no ruler who takes charge of a people, few or many, and does not deal justly among them, except that Allah will throw him on his face into the Fire.'" The other lowered his head for a while, then said: "Is it something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or from behind, from behind?" He said: "No, rather it is something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever is given charge of a flock and does not surround them with his sincere counsel [1] will not find the scent of Paradise, though its scent is found from a distance of a hundred years' journey.'" Ibn Ziyād [2] said: "Why did you not narrate this to me before now?" He said: "And now, were it not for the state I am in, I would not have narrated it to you."
