حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ، عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُخَارِقِ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: قَالَ عَلِيٌّ:
إِنِّي لَا أَرَى هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمَ إِلَّا ظَاهِرِينَ عَلَيْكُمْ، لِتَفَرُّقِكُمْ عَنْ حَقِّكُمْ، وَاجْتِمَاعِهِمْ عَلَى بَاطِلِهِمْ، وَإِنَّ الْإِمَامَ لَيْسَ بِشَاقٍّ [١]شَعَرَةً [٢]، وَإِنَّهُ يُخْطِئُ وَيُصِيبُ، فَإِذَا كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِمَامٌ يَعْدِلُ فِي الرَّعِيَّةِ، وَيَقْسِمُ بِالسَّوِيَّةِ فَاسْمَعُوا لَهُ وَأَطِيعُوا، وَإِنَّ النَّاسَ لَا يُصْلِحُهُمْ إِلَّا إِمَامٌ بَرٌّ أَوْ فَاجِرٌ، فَإِنْ كَانَ بَرًّا فَلِلرَّاعِي وَلِلرَّعِيَّةِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ فَاجِرًا عَبَدَ فِيهِ الْمُؤْمِنُ رَبَّهُ، وَعَمِلَ فِيهِ الْفَاجِرُ إِلَى أَجَلِهِ، وَإِنَّكُمْ سَتُعْرَضُونَ عَلَى سَبِّي وَعَلَى الْبَرَاءَةِ مِنِّي، فَمَنْ سَبَّنِي فَهُوَ فِي حِلٍّ مِنْ سَبِّي، وَلَا تَبْرَؤُوا مِنْ دِينِي فَإِنِّي عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ

If he is wicked, the believer worships his Lord under him, and the wicked one works under him until his appointed time. You will be made to curse me and to disown me. Whoever curses me, then he is free of blame for cursing me, but do not disown my religion, for I am upon Islam.
