When Ḥamzah was killed on the day of Uḥud, Ṣafiyyah came looking for him, not knowing what had been done to him. He said: She met ʿAlī and al-Zubayr, and ʿAlī said to al-Zubayr, "Tell her about him, for she is your mother." Al-Zubayr said, "No, you tell your aunt about him." She said, "What has Ḥamzah done?" He said: So they made it appear to her that they did not know. He said: Then the Prophet ﷺ came and said, "I fear for her mind." He said: So he placed his hand on her chest and made supplication for her. He said: She said, "Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return," and she wept. He said: Then he came and stood over him, and he had been mutilated, and he said, "Were it not for the grief of the women, I would leave him until he is resurrected from the crops of birds and the bellies of beasts." He said: Then he gave orders about the slain and began to pray over them. He said: He would place nine together with Ḥamzah and say the takbīr over them seven times; then they would be lifted away and Ḥamzah left. Then nine more would be brought and he would say the takbīr over them seven times, until he had finished with them.
