حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ حُبَابٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ عُبَيْدَةَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُبَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ مَوْلَى أُمِّ هَانِئٍ
أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ سُوَيْدٍ بَايَعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَآمَنَ بِهِ، ثُمَّ لَحِقَ بِأَهْلِ مَكَّةَ وَشَهِدَ أُحُدًا فَقَاتَلَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ثُمَّ أُسْقِطَ فِي يَدِهِ فَرَجَعَ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فَكَتَبَ إِلَى أَخِيهِ جُلَاسِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ: يَا أَخِي، إِنِّي قَدْ نَدِمْتُ عَلَى مَا كَانَ مِنِّي فَأَتُوبُ إِلَى اللهِ، وَأَرْجِعُ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، فَاذْكُرْ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَإِنْ طَمِعْتَ لِي فِي تَوْبَةٍ فَاكْتُبْ إِلَيَّ، فَذَكَرَهُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ [١]فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﴿كَيْفَ يَهْدِي اللهُ قَوْمًا كَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِيمَانِهِمْ ﴾قَالَ: فَقَالَ قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ مِمَّنْ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ: يَتَمَنَّعُ [٢]ثُمَّ يُرَاجَعُ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ ؟ ! فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِيمَانِهِمْ ثُمَّ ازْدَادُوا كُفْرًا لَنْ تُقْبَلَ تَوْبَتُهُمْ وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الضَّالُّونَ ﴾

That al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and believed in him, then he joined the people of Mecca and witnessed Uḥud and fought the Muslims. Then he was seized with remorse, so he returned to Mecca and wrote to his brother Julās b. Suwayd: "O my brother, I regret what I did, so I repent to Allah and return to Islam. Mention that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and if you have hope for me of repentance, write to me." So he mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah [1] and Allah revealed: ﴿كَيْفَ يَهْدِي اللهُ قَوْمًا كَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِيمَانِهِمْ ﴾ He said: Some of his companions, of those who were against him, said: "Will he hold back [2] and then be returned to Islam?!" So Allah revealed: ﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بَعْدَ إِيمَانِهِمْ ثُمَّ ازْدَادُوا كُفْرًا لَنْ تُقْبَلَ تَوْبَتُهُمْ وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الضَّالُّونَ ﴾
