machine translationAbū Usāmah narrated to us, from Mujālid, from Ziyād b. ʿilāqah, from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ, who said:

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina, Juhaynah came and said: "You have settled among us, so make a covenant with us, that we may be safe from you and you safe from us." So he made a covenant with them, though they did not accept Islam. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us out in Rajab, and we were not a hundred, and he commanded us to raid a clan of Kinānah beside Juhaynah. He said: So we raided them, and they were many, and we took refuge with Juhaynah, and they protected us. They said: "Why do you fight in the sacred month?" We said: "We only fight those who expelled us from the sacred land in the sacred month." Then some of us said to others: "What do you think?" Some said: "Let us go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and tell him." Another group said: "No, rather we will stay here." And I said, among some people with me: "No, rather let us go to this caravan of Quraysh and seize it." And at that time the spoils belonged to whoever took something. So we set off toward the caravan, and our companions set off to the Prophet ﷺ and told him the news. He stood up angry, his color and his face reddened, and said: "You went away from me together and came back separated! Division is only what destroyed those before you. I will send over you a man who is not the best of you, but the most patient of you in hunger and thirst." Then he sent ʿAbdullāh b. Jaḥsh al-Asadī over us, and he was the first commander in Islam.
