حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ:
مَا لِي أَرَى عُلَمَاءَكُمْ يَذْهَبُونَ، وَأَرَى جُهَّالَكُمْ لَا يَتَعَلَّمُونَ ؟ اعْلَمُوا قَبْلَ أَنْ يُرْفَعَ الْعِلْمُ، فَإِنَّ رَفْعَ الْعِلْمِ ذَهَابُ الْعُلَمَاءِ، مَا لِي أَرَاكُمْ تَحْرِصُونَ عَلَى مَا تُكُفِّلَ لَكُمْ بِهِ، وَتُضَيِّعُونَ مَا وُكِّلْتُمْ بِهِ ؟ لَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ بِشِرَارِكُمْ مِنَ الْبَيْطَارِ بِالْخَيْلِ: هُمُ الَّذِينَ لَا يَأْتُونَ الصَّلَاةَ إِلَّا دُبُرًا، وَلَا يَسْمَعُونَ الْقُرْآنَ إِلَّا هَجْرًا، وَلَا يَعْتِقُ مُحَرَّرُهُمْ

What is the matter with me that I see your scholars passing away, while I see your ignorant ones not learning? Learn before knowledge is lifted, for the lifting of knowledge is the passing away of the scholars. What is the matter with me that I see you eager for what has been guaranteed to you, and neglecting what you have been entrusted with? I know the worst of you better than the farrier knows horses: they are those who do not come to the prayer except at the end, who do not listen to the Qur'an except abandoningly, and whose freed slave is not set free.
