حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَسَدِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا حِبَّانُ، عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ:
كَتَبَ أَبُو مُوسَى إِلَى عُمَرَ إِنَّهُ تَأْتِينَا [٢]كُتُبٌ مَا نَعْرِفُ تَأْرِيخَهَا فَأَرِّخْ [٣]، فَاسْتَشَارَ أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: أَرِّخْ لِمَبْعَثِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: أَرِّخْ لِمَوْتِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: أُؤَرِّخُ لِمُهَاجَرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَإِنَّ مُهَاجَرَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَّقَ بَيْنَ الْحَقِّ وَالْبَاطِلِ، فَأَرَّخَ

Some of them said: "Date it from the sending of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." And some of them said: "Date it from the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." ʿUmar said: "I will date it from the emigration of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for the emigration of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ separated between truth and falsehood." So he set the date.
