My father narrated to me, saying: We besieged Tawwaj, and over us was a man of Banū Sulaym called Mujāshiʿ b. Masʿūd. He said: When we conquered it, I was wearing a worn-out shirt. So I went to one of the slain, those of the non-Arabs whom we had killed, and took the shirt of one of those slain men, and it had blood on it. So I washed it between stones and rubbed it until I had cleaned it, and I wore it and entered the town. Then I took a needle and threads and sewed my shirt. Then Mujāshiʿ stood up and said: O people, do not take any spoils unlawfully. Whoever takes anything unlawfully will come with it on the Day of Resurrection, even if it is a needle. He said: So I went and took off that shirt, and went to my own shirt and began to unpick it, until, by God, my son, I was tearing my shirt in my care that the thread not break. Then I took the shirt, the needle and the threads that I had taken from the shares of the spoils and threw them back in. Then I did not leave this world until I saw them taking loads of spoils unlawfully, and when you said: What is [this] [1]? they said: Our share of the booty is more than this.
