حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ الْقُرَشِيِّ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ:
كَتَبَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ زَمَنَ الْحِيرَةِ إِلَى مَرَازِبَةِ فَارِسَ: بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ مِنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ إِلَى مَرَازِبَةِ فَارِسَ، سَلَامٌ عَلَى مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الْهُدَى، أَمَّا بَعْدُ، فَإِنِّي أَحْمَدُ إِلَيْكُمُ اللهَ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ، الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي فَضَّ [١]خَدَمَتَكُمْ، وَفَرَّقَ جَمْعَكُمْ، وَخَالَفَ بَيْنَ كَلِمَتِكُمْ، فَإِذَا جَاءَكُمْ كِتَابِي هَذَا فَاعْتَقِدُوا مِنِّي الذِّمَّةَ، وَأَجِيبُوا إِلَى الْجِزْيَةِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا أَتَيْتُكُمْ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّونَ الْمَوْتَ حُبَّكُمْ لِلْحَيَاةِ

Khālid b. al-Walīd wrote, at the time of al-Ḥīrah, to the marzbans of Persia: In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Khālid b. al-Walīd to the marzbans of Persia. Peace be upon whoever follows the guidance. To proceed: I praise God to you, besides whom there is no god. Praise be to God, who has broken your order, scattered your gathering, and made your word differ. So when this letter of mine reaches you, then take from me a pledge of protection, and respond to the jizyah. If you do not do so, I will come to you with a people who love death as you love life.
