حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي غَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ:
أَنَّ قَاضِيًا مِنْ قُضَاةِ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ أَتَى عُمَرَ فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، رَأَيْتُ رُؤْيَا أَفْظَعَتْنِي، قَالَ: وَمَا رَأَيْتَ ؟ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ يَقْتَتِلَانِ، وَالنُّجُومَ مَعَهُمَا نِصْفَيْنِ، قَالَ: فَمَعَ أَيِّهِمَا كُنْتَ ؟ قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَعَ الْقَمَرِ عَلَى الشَّمْسِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ آيَتَيْنِ فَمَحَوْنَا آيَةَ اللَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَا آيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً ﴾فَانْطَلِقْ، فَوَاللهِ لَا تَعْمَلُ لِي عَمَلًا أَبَدًا، قَالَ عَطَاءٌ: بَلَغَنِي [١]أَنَّهُ قُتِلَ مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَوْمَ صِفِّينَ.

A judge from among the judges of the people of Syria came to ʿUmar and said: "O Commander of the Believers, I saw a dream that alarmed me." He said: "What did you see?" He said: "I saw the sun and the moon fighting each other, and the stars with them, split into two halves." He said: "With which of them were you?" He said: "I was with the moon against the sun." So ʿUmar said: ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ آيَتَيْنِ فَمَحَوْنَا آيَةَ اللَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَا آيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً﴾ Go away! By God, you will never work for me in any post. ʿAṭāʾ said: It has reached me [1] that he was killed with Muʿāwiyah on the day of Ṣiffīn.
