Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr came to ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar while he was walking between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah and said: "Who are you?" He said: "Your nephew, Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr." He said: "The master of Iraq?" He said: "Yes. I have come to ask you about a people who cast off obedience, shed blood and collected wealth, so they were fought and overcome, and they entered a palace and fortified themselves [in it], then they asked for safe-conduct and were given it, and then they were killed?" He said: "And how many were they?" He said: "Five thousand." Ibn ʿUmar then glorified God (said subḥān Allāh) and said: "May God grant you long life, O Ibn al-Zubayr! If a man came to the livestock of al-Zubayr and slaughtered five thousand of it in one morning, would you consider him wasteful?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then you consider it wastefulness with regard to beasts that do not know who God is, and yet you deem it lawful with regard to those who pronounced "there is no god but God" for even one day?"
