machine translationIbn Idrīs narrated to us, from Misʿar, from ʿAmr b. Murrah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, who said:
Machine translation, not reviewed
A man came to Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah and began to mention ʿAbdullāh b. Ubayy and what was revealed about him of the Qur'an, and to find fault with him, though there was a bond of sanctity and kinship between him and ʿAbdullāh, while Kaʿb remained silent. He said: Then the man went to ʿUmar and said: O Commander of the Believers, have you not seen that I mentioned what was revealed about ʿAbdullāh b. Ubayy, and nothing came from Kaʿb! Then ʿUmar met Kaʿb and said: Was I not told that ʿAbdullāh b. Ubayy was mentioned in your presence and nothing came from you?! Kaʿb said: I heard his words, but when I saw that he seemed to have deliberately intended to harm me, I disliked to help him in harming me. He said: Then ʿUmar said: I wish you had struck his nose, or: I wish you had broken his nose.
