ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā entered upon al-Ḥajjāj, and he said to those sitting with him: "If you want to look at a man who insults the Commander of the Believers ʿUthmān, then this is the one among you" - meaning ʿAbd al-Raḥmān [1] - ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: "I seek refuge in God, O Amīr, that I would insult ʿUthmān. Three verses in the Book of God restrain me from that. God said: ﴿لِلْفُقَرَاءِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ الَّذِينَ أُخْرِجُوا مِنْ دِيَارِهِمْ وَأَمْوَالِهِمْ يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلا مِنَ اللهِ وَرِضْوَانًا وَيَنْصُرُونَ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الصَّادِقُونَ ﴾ He said: ʿUthmān was one of them. Then he said: ﴿وَالَّذِينَ تَبَوَّءُوا الدَّارَ وَالإِيمَانَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ ﴾ and my father was one of them. ﴿وَالَّذِينَ جَاءُوا مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالإِيمَانِ ﴾ [3] and I was one of them." He said: "You have spoken the truth."
