Shaqīq entered upon al-Ḥajjāj, who said: "What is your name?" He said: "The governor did not send for me until he knew my name." He said: "I want to seek your help with some of my work." He said: "I fear for myself with regard to you." So he asked to be excused, and he excused him. He said: When he left him, he stood up saying: "Thus does one feign blindness." He said: So al-Ḥajjāj said: "Guide the shaykh aright, guide the shaykh aright."
