حَدَّثَنَا مَرْحُومُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ أَبِي نَعَامَةَ السَّعْدِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ:
خَرَجَ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَلَى حَلْقَةٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ: مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ ؟ فَقَالُوا [١]: جَلَسْنَا نَذْكُرُ اللهَ وَنَحْمَدُهُ عَلَى مَا هَدَانَا لِلْإِسْلَامِ وَمَنَّ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ، قَالَ: آللهِ مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ إِلَّا ذَاكَ ؟ قَالُوا: وَاللهِ مَا أَجْلَسَنَا إِلَّا ذَاكَ، قَالَ [٢]: أَمَا إِنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَحْلِفْكُمْ تُهْمَةً لَكُمْ، وَمَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ بِمَنْزِلَةٍ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَقَلَّ عَنْهُ حَدِيثًا مِنِّي، وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَى حَلْقَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ: مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ ؟ فَقَالُوا: جَلَسْنَا نَذْكُرُ اللهَ وَنَحْمَدُهُ عَلَى مَا هَدَانَا لِلْإِسْلَامِ وَمَنَّ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ؛ قَالَ: آللهِ [٣]مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ إِلَّا ذَاكَ ؟ [قَالُوا: وَاللهِ مَا أَجْلَسَنَا إِلَّا ذَاكَ ] [٤]، فَقَالَ: أَمَا إِنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَحْلِفْكُمْ تُهْمَةً لَكُمْ، وَلَكِنْ [٥]أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ اللهَ يُبَاهِي بِكُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ

Muʿāwiyah came out upon a circle in the mosque and said: "What has made you sit?" They said [1]: "We sat to remember Allah and to praise Him for having guided us to Islam and bestowed it upon us." He said: "By Allah, did nothing make you sit except that?" They said: "By Allah, nothing made us sit except that." He said [2]: "I did not ask you to swear out of suspicion of you. There is no one of my standing with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who has narrated fewer hadiths from him than I. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out upon a circle of his Companions and said: 'What has made you sit?' They said: 'We sat to remember Allah and to praise Him for having guided us to Islam and bestowed it upon us.' He said: 'By Allah [3], did nothing make you sit except that?' [They said: 'By Allah, nothing made us sit except that.'] [4] He said: 'I did not ask you to swear out of suspicion of you, but [5] Jibrīl came to me and informed me that Allah is boasting about you to the angels.'"
