A man asked [ʿAbdullāh] [1] b. Khanbash: What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do when the devils plotted against him? He said: The devils came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the valleys, and they descended upon him from the mountains, and among them was a devil with a flame of fire, wishing to burn the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with it, and he was terrified of him - Jaʿfar said: I think he began to draw back - and Jibrīl came and said: "O Muḥammad, say." He said: And what shall I say? He said: Say: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can transgress, from the evil of what He has created, sown and originated, and from the evil of what descends from the heaven and from the evil of what ascends in it, and from the evil of what He has sown in the earth and from the evil of what comes out of it, and from the evil of the trials of the night and the day, and from the evil of every night-visitor, except a visitor [2] who comes with good, O Most Merciful. He said: So the fire of the devils was extinguished and Allah defeated them.
