✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2648 - Al-Ḥusayn b. Dāwūd b. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim b. al-Ḥasan b. Zayd b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAlawī. Al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ said: Al-Ḥusayn b. Dāwūd was the shaykh of the family of the Messenger of God ﷺ in his age in Khurāsān and the foremost of the ʿAlawīs in his days. He was among the people most abundant in prayer, charity, and love for the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ. I accompanied him for a time, and I never heard him mention ʿUthmān but that he said: "The Commander of the Believers, the martyr ؓ," and wept; and I never heard him mention ʿĀʾishah but that he said: "The truthful one, daughter of the truthful one, beloved of the beloved of God," and wept. He heard from Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad al-Ḥāfiẓ and ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Shīrawayh, and he heard much from Abū Bakr b. Khuzaymah and Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Thaqafī. [He was] from the noblest house of the Ḥasanīs and the most diligent among them in Khurāsān, for Dāwūd b. ʿAlī was the benefactor of the family of the Messenger of God ﷺ in his age, and ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā was the most ascetic of the ʿAlawīs in his age and the most diligent among them, and [ʿĪsā] was nicknamed al-Fayyāḍ because of the abundance of his gifts. Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim was a boon companion of al-Rashīd, then after him al-Maʾmūn. Al-Qāsim was the monk of the family of Muḥammad ﷺ in his age. Al-Ḥasan b. Zayd was governor of al-Madīnah in his age and the teacher of Mālik b. Anas, and he transmitted from him in the Muwaṭṭaʾ. Al-Ḥusayn b. Dāwūd died on Monday, the twelfth of Jumādā al-Ākhirah in the year 355, between noon and mid-afternoon. I heard him in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year 355 saying: "I saw a strange dream." We asked him about the dream, and he said: "I saw in sleep as if I were on the shore of the sea, and behold a small boat like lightning passing by. They said: 'This is the Messenger of God ﷺ.' I said: 'Peace be upon you, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'And upon you be peace.' No sooner than I saw another boat approaching. They said: 'This is the Commander of the Believers ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib.' I said: 'Peace be upon you, O father.' He said: 'And upon you be peace.' No sooner than another boat came into view. They said: 'Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī.' I said: 'Peace be upon you, O father.' He said: 'And upon you be peace.' No sooner than another boat passed by, empty of anyone. I said: 'Whose is this boat?' They said: 'This boat is for you.' No more than less than a month passed after this dream until he died. 2649 - ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad b. Mattūyah, Abū al-Qāsim al-Zāhid al-Balkhī. The muḥaddith of Balkh in his age. He heard from a group and came to Baghdād in the year 350 as a pilgrim. Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar selected narrations from him, and Ibn Rizqawayh and al-Ḥammāmī transmitted from him. He was trustworthy, and he died in this year. 2650 - Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. Yaḥyā b. Ḥassān b. al-Waḍḍāḥ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Anbārī, known as al-Waḍḍāḥī the poet. He moved to Khurāsān and settled there, residing in Nīsābūr. He mentioned that he heard ḥadīth from al-Muḥāmillī, Ibn Makhlad, and Abū Rawq. Al-Ḥākim [Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Nīsābūrī] transmitted something of his poetry from him and said: "He was the best poet of his time." Among his poetry: May God water the gate of al-Karkh, a dwelling and a home, and those who inhabited it, with pouring rain of the thundering cloud. If the one who weeps over the traces of the abode at al-Liwā and its neighbor Umm al-Rabāb at Maʾsal were to see the open spaces of al-Karkh or enter its land, he would refrain from mentioning al-Dukhūl and Ḥawmal. [Muḥammad] al-Waḍḍāḥī died in Nīsābūr in Ramaḍān of this year. 2651 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Hārūn b. Muḥammad al-Rīwandī, known as Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī. Al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī heard together with Abū Bakr b. Isḥāq b. Mandah from Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Ayyūb and his peers [in al-Rayy], then he did not restrict himself to that. He related rejected reports and transmitted from people who are unknown, such as [Abū] al-ʿAkawwak al-Ḥijāzī and others. One day I entered upon Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Thaqafī, and he presented to me a ḥadīth with an obscure chain from al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf, who said: "I heard Samurah b. Jundub say: 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "Whomever God wills good for, He gives him understanding in religion."'" I said: "This is false." He said: "Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated it to us." I said: "This is fabricated. He only used it to ingratiate himself with you because you are from the descendants of al-Ḥajjāj." He laughed. A few days later, an old man I did not know entered the mosque and prayed with me, then said: "I have come about something I want to present to you. Do you know me?" I said: "No." He said: "I am Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī. Abū Muḥammad al-Thaqafī sent me [to you] to present my ḥadīth to you, so I will not narrate except what you approve." I said: "Leave aside first [Abū] al-ʿAkawwak al-Ḥijāzī and Aḥmad b. ʿAmr al-Zanjānī, for I believe that God Most High did not create them. Then present your original sources to me so we may examine them." He said: "I adjure you by God, have mercy on me, for they are the capital. I wrote from Abū al-ʿAkawwak in Makkah and from Aḥmad b. ʿAmr in Baghdād." I said: "Bring out your original sources from them, if the error is mine." I told him that our shaykh testified that he heard with you from Muḥammad b. Ayyūb, and if you restricted yourself to that it would be better for you. He parted from me on this, and it was as if I said to him, "Increase in what you began," for he increased upon it. He died in this year. 2652 - Muḥammad b. ʿUmar b. Sālim b. al-Barāʾ b. Sabrah b. Sayyār, Abū Bakr, qāḍī of al-Mawṣil, known as Ibn al-Jiʿābī. He was born in the year 284. He narrated from Yūsuf al-Qāḍī, Jaʿfar al-Firyābī, and many others. He was one of the excellent ḥuffāẓ. He accompanied Abū al-ʿAbbās b. ʿUqdah and took the science of ḥifẓ from him. He has many works in the sciences of ḥadīth. Al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Shāhīn, and Ibn Rizqawayh transmitted from him. Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥāfiẓ used to say: "I have not seen among the Baghdādīs anyone with a better memory than him," and he had seen Ibn Ṣāʿid, Abū Bakr al-Nīsābūrī, and others. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. al-Faḍl al-Qaṭṭān said: I heard Abū Bakr al-Jiʿābī say: "I entered al-Raqqah, and there I had a chest of books. I sent my servant to the man who had my books, and the servant returned distressed and said: 'The books are lost.' I said: 'My son, do not grieve, for in them are two hundred thousand ḥadīths, not one of which is problematic for me, neither chain nor text.'" Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Bāqī informed us: ʿAlī b. Abī ʿAlī informed us from his father, who said: "We have not witnessed anyone with a better memory than Abū Bakr al-Jiʿābī. I heard someone say that he memorized two hundred thousand ḥadīths and could answer in the like of them, except that he surpassed the ḥuffāẓ in that he would recite the texts with their exact words, while most ḥuffāẓ are lenient in that. He also surpassed them in memorizing the maqṭūʿ, the mursal, and anecdotes, and perhaps he memorized of these nearly as much as he memorized of the musnad ḥadīth. He was an imam in the knowledge of the defects of ḥadīth, the reliability of men, their deficiencies, their weak ones, their names, their genealogies, their kunyahs, their birth dates, their death dates, their schools, what is criticized against each one, and what is described as soundness. At the end of his life, this science had reached its end with him, so that in his time there remained no one in the world who preceded him in it." Abū al-Ḥasan b. Rizqawayh said: "Ibn al-Jiʿābī used to dictate, and the street where he dictated, and the road, would become full. Ibn al-Muẓaffar and al-Dāraquṭnī would attend, and he would not dictate all the ḥadīths with their chains except from his memory." Al-Qāḍī Abū ʿUmar al-Qāsim b. Jaʿfar al-Hāshimī said: "I heard al-Jiʿābī say: 'I memorize four hundred thousand ḥadīths and I can engage in recollection with six hundred thousand ḥadīths.'" The compiler, may God have mercy on him, said: Al-Jiʿābī was a Shīʿī, and he lived at the Bāb al-Baṣrah. Al-Dāraquṭnī was asked about his ḥadīth and said: "He mixed." Al-Barqānī said: "He was a man of rare reports, and his school in Shīʿism is well known. Lack of religion and wine-drinking were reported from him, and God knows best." Al-Azharī said: When Ibn al-Jiʿābī died, the funeral prayer was performed over him in the Jāmiʿ al-Manṣūr, and he was carried to the cemetery of Quraysh and buried there. Sakīnah, the wailing woman of the Rāfiḍah, was lamenting with his funeral procession. He had bequeathed that his books be burned, and all of them were burned, together with books belonging to people that were with him. Al-Azharī said: Abū al-Ḥusayn b. al-Bawwāb told me: "I had with Ibn al-Jiʿābī one hundred and fifty parts, and they were lost among what was burned." Ibn al-Jiʿābī died in the middle of Rajab of this year.
