Then the year 353 AH began
وَفِيهَا طَلَبَ مُعِزُّ الدَّوْلَةِ مِنَ الْخَلِيفَةِ الْمُطِيعِ لِلَّهِ أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَهُ فِي دُخُولِ دَارِ الْخِلَافَةِ لِيَتَفَرَّجَ فِيهَا، فَأَذِنَ لَهُ فَدَخَلَهَا، فَبَعَثَ خَادِمَهُ وَحَاجِبَهُ مَعَهُ، فَطَافُوا مَعَهُ فِيهَا، وَهُوَ مُسْرِعٌ خَائِفٌ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ وَقَدْ خَافَ مِنْ غَائِلَةِ ذَلِكَ، وَخَشِيَ أَنْ يُقْتَلَ فِي بَعْضِ الدَّهَالِيزِ، فَتَصَدَّقَ بِعَشَرَةِ آلَافٍ لَمَّا خَرَجَ شُكْرًا لِلَّهِ عَلَى سَلَامَتِهِ، وَازْدَادَ حُبًّا فِي الْخَلِيفَةِ الْمُطِيعِ لِلَّهِ مِنْ يَوْمِئِذٍ، فَكَانَ فِي جُمْلَةِ مَا رَأَى مِنَ الْعَجَائِبِ بِهَا صَنَمٌ مِنْ نُحَاسٍ عَلَى صُورَةِ امْرَأَةٍ حَسْنَاءَ جِدًّا، وَحَوْلَهَا أَصْنَامٌ صِغَارٌ فِي هَيْئَةِ الْخَدَمِ لَهَا، كَانَ قَدْ أُتِيَ بِهِ فِي زَمَنِ الْمُقْتَدِرِ، فَأُقِيمَ هُنَاكَ لِيَتَفَرَّجَ عَلَيْهِ الْجَوَارِي وَالنِّسَاءُ، فَهَمَّ الْمُعِزُّ أَنْ يَطْلُبَهُ مِنَ الْخَلِيفَةِ، ثُمَّ ارْتَأَى فَتَرَكَ ذَلِكَ.
Translation
✧ In this year Muʿizz al-Dawlah asked the Caliph al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh to permit him to enter Dār al-Khilāfah in order to amuse himself therein. He granted him permission, so he entered it. He sent his servant and his chamberlain with him, and they went around with him therein while he was hurrying and fearful. Then he left, having feared some calamity from that, and dreaded that he might be killed in one of the corridors, so he gave ten thousand in charity when he left, in gratitude to God for his safety. And his love for the Caliph al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh increased from that day onward. Among the wonders he saw there was an idol of brass in the form of a very beautiful woman, surrounded by small idols in the appearance of servants to her. It had been brought in the time of al-Muqtadir and set up there for the slave-girls and women to amuse themselves with it. Muʿizz considered asking the Caliph for it, but then he reconsidered and left that aside.
