فَأَخَذْتُ أَرْبَعَمِائَةِ دِينَارٍ فَانْصَرَفْتُ، فَقَصَصْتُ قِصَّتِي عَلَى صَدِيقٍ لِي وَأَرَيْتُهُ الدَّنَانِيرَ، وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ يُحْضِرَ غُرَمَائِي وَيَتَوَسَّطَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُمْ، فَفَعَلَ فَقَالُوا: نَحْنُ نُؤَخِّرُهُ ثَلَاثَ سِنِينَ ✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2482 - Al-Ḥasan b. Ḥammawayh b. al-Ḥusayn, Abū Muḥammad al-Qāḍī al-Astarābādhī: He met ʿAmmār b. Rajāʾ but did not write from him. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Rāhawayh and a great many others narrated from him. He was judge of Astarābādh for a long time. He was one of those who stood in prayer at night, keeping vigil in the pre-dawn hours. He was proverbial for fulfilling the needs of the Muslims and attending to their affairs with his own person, wealth, and influence. He established a dictation session in Astarābādh, and its people wrote from him. He died suddenly on the chest of a slave girl at the moment of ejaculation in this year. 2483 - Ḥamzah b. al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Abū ʿUmar al-Hāshimī: He was born in Shaʿbān of the year two hundred forty-seven. He used to lead the people in prayer in the mosque of al-Manṣūr. Then he took on the imamate of the mosque of al-Ruṣāfah. He narrated from Saʿdān b. Naṣr al-Dūrī and Ḥanbal b. Isḥāq. Al-Dāraquṭnī and Ibn Shāhīn narrated from him. He was trustworthy, firmly established, outwardly upright, famous for transmission, known for goodness and sound doctrine. He died in Shaʿbān of this year and was buried near the grave of Maʿrūf. 2484 - ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Khuttalī: He heard Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Birtī, al-Bāghandī, and Ibn Abī al-Dunyā. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him. He was quick of understanding, knowledgeable, trustworthy, and a ḥāfiẓ. He moved to al-Baṣrah and settled there. ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin said: My father informed me, saying: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Khuttalī came to us in al-Baṣrah as a scholar of ḥadīth. He was famous for his memory. He arrived without any of his books, and he narrated for months until his books caught up with him. I heard him say: I narrated fifty thousand ḥadīths from memory until my books reached me. 2485 - Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī: He died in the year three hundred thirty-five. He had left Baghdad because of straitened circumstances that befell him, and he died in al-Baṣrah in this year. 2486 - ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā b. Dāwūd b. al-Jarrāḥ, Abū al-Ḥasan, vizier of al-Muqtadir billāh and al-Qāhir billāh: He was born in the year two hundred forty-five. He heard Aḥmad b. Budayl al-Kūfī, al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad al-Zaʿfarānī, Ḥumayd b. al-Rabīʿ, and ʿUmar b. Shabbah. Al-Ṭabarānī and others narrated from him. He was truthful, virtuous, and upright in his office, extremely generous in good deeds, recitation of the Qurʾān, prayer, and fasting. He loved the people of knowledge and frequently sat with them. His origin was from the Persians. His grandfather Dāwūd was from Dayr Qunnā, one of the leading notables, as was his father ʿĪsā. Ibn Kāmil al-Qāḍī said: I heard the vizier ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā say: I earned seven hundred thousand dinars, of which I spent six hundred and eighty thousand on these causes, meaning the causes of piety. Abū [Bakr] Sahl b. Ziyād al-Qaṭṭān, the associate of ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā, said: I was with ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā when he was exiled to Makkah. When we entered it, we came in during intense heat and had nearly perished. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā performed ṭawāf and saʿy, then came and threw himself down as if dead from the heat and fatigue. He was extremely agitated and said: I long for a drink of ice-cold water from God. I said to him: O our master, you know that this is not to be found in this place. He said: It is as I said, but my soul was too constrained to conceal this utterance, so it sought relief in wishes. He said: I left him and returned to the Sacred Mosque. Hardly had I settled there when a cloud arose, with lightning and thunder, bringing a light rain and much hail. I hurried to the servants and said: Gather it up. We gathered a great amount and filled many jars with it. The people of Makkah also gathered a great amount. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā was fasting. When sunset came, he went out to the Sacred Mosque to pray the maghrib. I said to him: By God, you are favored, and misfortune is departing. These are signs of favor. Drink the ice as you requested. I brought him cups filled with various kinds of gruels and drinks, packed with hail. He began giving it to those near him among the Sufis, the residents of the mosque, and the weak, and asking for more while we kept bringing what we had. I said to him: Drink. He said: Let the people drink first. I hid about five raṭls and told him: Nothing remains. He said: Praise be to God. Would that I had wished for forgiveness, for perhaps I would have been answered. When he entered the house, I kept coaxing him until he drank some of it and nourished himself that night with the rest. Al-Qāḍī Abū al-ʿAlāʾ said: Al-Qāḍī Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Jaʿfar recited to us, saying: My father recited to me, saying: The vizier Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā recited to me his own verses: Whoever asks about me gloating over what befell me, or gloats without asking, the vicissitudes have shown me to be the son of a free woman, patient under the terrors of those earthquakes. It is also related to us from Mukram b. Bakr al-Qāḍī, who said: I was a close associate of the vizier Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā. One day I came to him when he was extremely distressed, and I asked him about that. He said: Our governor at the frontier wrote to me that the Muslim captives in the land of the Byzantines had been treated with kindness and protection until two young men among the Byzantines recently assumed the kingship. They oppressed the captives, starved them, stripped them, punished them, and demanded that they convert to Christianity. They are in severe torment, and I have no means to deal with this, and the caliph does not support me. I used to spend money and equip armies to Constantinople. I said: Here is an easy matter by which the goal may be achieved. He said: Speak, O blessed one! I said: In Antioch there is a Christian dignitary called the patriarch, and in Jerusalem another called the catholicos. Their authority is effective over the Byzantines and their kings. Both cities are under our rule, and the two men are under our protection. Let the vizier order them to be summoned and instruct them to remove what has newly befallen the captives. If it is not removed, no one else will be held responsible for that crime. He wrote summoning them. Two months later, his messenger came to me, and I went and found him pleased. He said: May God reward you well on behalf of yourself, your religion, and me. Your counsel was the most blessed and sound. Here is the governor's messenger, who has arrived. Tell him what happened. He said: The governor sent me with the messengers of the patriarch and the catholicos to Constantinople. They wrote to its two kings: You have, by what you have done to the captives, departed from the religion of the Messiah ﷺ. You have no right to harm the captives, for that contradicts your religion and what the Messiah ﷺ commands you. Either desist from this action or we will excommunicate you and curse you from these two thrones. When we reached Constantinople, we were kept waiting for days. Then the two messengers delivered the letter to them, and they summoned me. The interpreter said: The two kings say to you both: What has reached the king of the Arabs about our treatment of the captives is a lie and slander. We give you permission to enter so that you may see them in a state contrary to what was said, and hear their gratitude to us. So I entered and saw the captives. Their faces looked as if they had come out of graves, testifying to the harm they had suffered. I saw that all their clothes were new, and I realized that I had been kept waiting those days in order to change their condition. The captives said to me: We are grateful to the two kings; may God reward them. Some of them gestured to me that what had reached you was true, but it was only lightened for us when you arrived here. How did our situation reach you? I said: ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā became vizier, and your situation reached him, so he did such and such. They raised their voices in supplication and weeping. I heard a woman among them say: Command, O ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā, may God never forget this deed of yours! When the vizier heard that, he burst into tears and prostrated in gratitude to God Almighty. I said: O vizier, I often hear you complain of the vizierate. Could you have attained this reward without the vizierate? He thanked me, and I left. From Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin al-Tanūkhī, from his father, who said: A group of people of the capital told me that a man in al-Karkh was known for his uprightness, but he incurred a debt. He left his shop and confined himself to his house, devoting himself to supplication and prayer for many nights. On Friday night he prayed, supplicated, and slept. He said: I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he was saying: Go to ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā the vizier, for I have commanded him to give you four hundred dinars. Take them and set your affairs right with them. He said: My debt was six hundred dinars. The next morning I said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me, for Satan cannot take my form." So why should I not go to the vizier? I came to the gate but was prevented from reaching him. I sat until I became distressed and was about to leave. Then his associate came out, who knew me slightly. I told him, and he said: O man, by God, the vizier has been seeking you since before dawn until now. He has asked about you, but no one recognized you. Messengers have been sent out searching for you. Stay where you are. He said: He went in, and before long I was summoned. I entered to the vizier. He said to me: What is your name? I said: So-and-so son of so-and-so the perfumer. He said: From the people of al-Karkh? I said: Yes. He said: O man, may God reward you well for coming to me. By God, I have not enjoyed life since last night. The Messenger of God ﷺ came to me in my sleep and said: "Give so-and-so son of so-and-so the perfumer from al-Karkh four hundred dinars to set his affairs right." All day I have been searching for you, and no one recognized you. Then he said: Bring a thousand dinars. They brought them. He said: These four hundred dinars take them in compliance with the command of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and six hundred are a gift from me to you. I said: O vizier, I would not like to receive more than the gift of the Messenger of God ﷺ, for I hope for blessing in it and not in anything else. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā wept and said: [This is true certainty.] Take what seems right to you. I took the four hundred dinars and left. I told my story to a friend of mine and showed him the dinars. I asked him to bring my creditors and mediate between me and them. He did so. They said: We will give him three years' delay with the money, so let him open his shop. I said: No, rather they should take from me one third of their debts, which were six hundred. I gave everyone who was owed something one third of his due. The amount I distributed among them was two hundred dinars. I opened my shop and put the remaining two hundred dinars into it. Before the year had passed, I had a thousand dinars. I paid off my entire debt, and my situation kept improving. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā died in this year. It is also said: in the year three hundred thirty-four, at the age of eighty-nine. 2487 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad [b. al-Rabīʿ] b. Sulaymān b. Abī Maryam, Abū Rajāʾ al-Aswānī, the poet and jurist: ʿAlī b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz wrote from him. He was a jurist of the Shāfiʿī school, eloquent and dignified. He had a long poem in which he included accounts of the world, mentioning the stories of the prophets one by one. About two years before his death he was asked: How many verses has your poem reached now? He said: One hundred and thirty thousand verses. There remain some things I need to add to it. He versified jurisprudence in it, enumerated the book of al-Muzanī, and wrote on medicine and philosophy. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. 2488 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Sulaymān, Abū al-Faḍl, known as Ibn al-Qawwās: He narrated from Isḥāq b. Sunayn al-Khuttalī. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him. Aḥmad b. ʿAlī said: I read in the handwriting of Abū al-Fatḥ b. Masrūq that Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Sulaymān died in Baghdad at the beginning of the year three hundred thirty-five. They said: He was trustworthy. 2489 - Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq b. Baḥr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Fārisī: He studied jurisprudence according to the Shāfiʿī school. He narrated from Abū Zurʿah al-Dimashqī and others. Al-Dāraquṭnī and others narrated from him. The last to narrate from him was Abū ʿUmar b. Mahdī. He was trustworthy, firmly established, and virtuous. He died in [Shaʿbān] of this year. 2490 - Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿUthmān, Abū Bakr b. Abī Yaʿqūb al-Muqriʾ: He narrated from Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Munādī and others. He was truthful. 2491 - Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. Yazīd, Abū Bakr al-Ṣayrafī al-Maṭīrī: From the people of Maṭīrah of Surra man raʾā. He settled in Baghdad and narrated there from al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah, ʿAlī b. Ḥarb, and ʿAbbās al-Dūrī [and others]. He was a ḥāfiẓ. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him and said: He is trustworthy and reliable. Ibn Shāhīn said: He was truthful and trustworthy. He died in Ṣafar of this year. 2492 - Hārūn b. Muḥammad b. Hārūn b. ʿAlī [b. ʿĪsā] b. Mūsā b. ʿAmr b. Jābir [b. Yazīd b. Jābir] b. ʿĀmir b. Usayd b. Taym b. Ṣubḥ b. Dhuhl b. Mālik b. Bakr b. Saʿd b. Ḍabbah, Abū Jaʿfar, father of the judge Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Hārūn. His ancestors were kings of Oman in ancient times. The first of the kings of Banū Ḍabbah to enter Oman and take possession of it, and then his descendants after him inherited leadership and nobility there. Yazīd b. Jābir lived to see Islam and embraced it, and his Islam was good. The first of them to move from Oman was Hārūn b. Muḥammad. He settled in Baghdad and narrated there. His son narrated from him. ʿAlī b. ʿUmar al-Dāraquṭnī said, mentioning Hārūn b. Muḥammad: He attained all virtues and held sway in Oman in his youth. Then he left it and met scholars in Makkah, al-Kūfah, and al-Baṣrah. He entered the City of Peace in the year three hundred five. His standing with the sultan rose, his rank increased, his generous acts and gifts spread, he spent his wealth, and poets came to him from every place. They praised him abundantly, and he gave them ample rewards.
