✧ When a man from among us came to Madinah, he would stay in the Suffah. If he had an overseer there, he would stay with his overseer; if he had no overseer there, he would stay in the Suffah. I came to Madinah and had no overseer there, so I stayed in the Suffah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to come to us every day with a mudd of dates shared between two, and he would clothe us in coarse cloth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed one of the daytime prayers with us. When he said the salam, the people of the Suffah called out to him from the right and left: O Messenger of Allah, the dates have burned our stomachs and the coarse cloth has worn out. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to his pulpit, ascended it, praised Allah and extolled Him, then mentioned the hardship he had faced from his people until he said, "There came upon me and my companion a period of more than ten nights when we had no food except berir." I said to Abu Harb, "What is berir?" He said, "Bad food, the fruit of the arak tree." He said, "We came to these brothers of ours from the Ansar, and their main food was dates, so they shared them with us. By Allah, if I could find bread and meat for you, I would fill you with it. But perhaps you will live to see a time, or whoever among you lives to see it, when large platters will be brought to you morning and evening, and you will wear garments like the coverings of the Kaaba." Dawud said: Abu Harb said to me, "O Dawud, do you know what the coverings of the Kaaba were in those days?" I said, "No." He said, "White garments that were brought from Yemen." Sahih.
