حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ بَالَوَيْهِ ثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْحَرْبِيُّ ثَنَا مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ
وَسُفْيَانُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ الْغَامِدِيُّ مِنْ أَهْلِ حِمْصٍ صَحِبَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ لَهُ بَأْسٌ وَنَجْدَةٌ وَسَخَاءٌ وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَغَارَ عَلَى هَيْتَ وَالْأَنْبَارِ فِي أَيَّامِ عَلِيٍّ فَقَتَلَ وَسَبَى وَكَانَ مِمَّنْ قَتَلَ حَسَّانَ بْنَ حَسَّانَ الْبَكْرِيَّ أَخَا الْحَارِثِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ الْوَافِدَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مَعَ قَيْلَةَ بِنْتِ مَخْرَمَةَ فَخَطَبَ عَلِيٌّ وَقَالَ فِي خُطْبَتِهِ إِنَّ أَخَا غَامِدٍ قَدْ أَغَارَ عَلَى هَيْتَ وَالْأَنْبَارِ وَكَانَ عَلَى الصَّوَائِفِ فِي أَيَّامِ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَكَانَ مُعَاوِيَةُ يُعَظِّمُ أَمْرَهُ وَيَقُولُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ يَحْمِلُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ الْوَاحِدِ عَلَى أَلْفٍ قَارِحٍ وَاسْتَعْمَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بَعْدَهُ عَلَى الصَّوَائِفِ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ الْفَزَارِيَّ فَقِيلَ [البحر الطويل] أَقِمْ يَا ابْنَ مَسْعُودْ قَنَاةً صَلِيبَةً كَمَا كَانَ سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ يُقِيمُهَا وَسُمْ يَا ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ مَدَايِنَ قَيْصَرٍ كَمَا كَانَ سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عَوْفٍ يَسُومُهَا وَسُفْيَانُ قَرْمٌ مِنْ قُرُومِ قَبِيلَةٍ بِهِ تَيْمٌ وَمَا فِي النَّاسِ حَيٌّ يَضِيمُهَا

✧ Sufyan b. Awf al-Ghamidi was from the people of Hims. He accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was brave, courageous, and generous. He is the one who raided Hit and al-Anbar during the days of Ali, killing and taking captives. He was among those who killed Hassan b. Hassan al-Bakri, the brother of al-Harith b. Hassan, who came as a delegate to the Prophet ﷺ with Qayla bt. Makhrama. Ali gave a sermon and said in his sermon: "The brother of Ghamid has raided Hit and al-Anbar." He was in charge of the summer expeditions during the days of Muawiya. Muawiya used to honor his position and say: "He would carry out raids in a single gathering against a thousand fully mature horses." After him, Muawiya appointed Ibn Masud al-Fazari over the summer expeditions, and it was said: [al-Bahr al-Tawil] "Set up, O Ibn Masud, a firm spear, as Sufyan b. Awf used to set it up. And raid, O Ibn Masud, the cities of Caesar, as Sufyan b. Awf used to raid them. Sufyan is a chief among the chiefs of a tribe by whom Taym is protected, and there is no people among the people who can oppress them."
