حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ رُسْتَةَ ثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ قَالَ
وَكَعْبُ بْنُ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَبِي كَعْبِ بْنِ الْقَيْنِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ سَوَّادِ بْنِ غَنْمِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ وَهُوَ شَاعِرُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ فِيمَا قِيلَ يُكَنَّى أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَشَهِدَ كَعْبٌ أُحُدًا فَجُرِحَ بِهَا بَضْعَةَ عَشَرَ جُرْحًا وَارْتُثَّ وَلَمْ يَشْهَدْ بَدْرًا وَشَهِدَ الْخَنْدَقَ وَالْمَشَاهِدَ كُلَّهَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا خَلَا تَبُوكَ فَإِنَّهُ تَخَلَّفَ عَنْهَا وَهُوَ أَحَدُ الثَّلَاثَةِ الَّذِينَ تَخَلَّفُوا فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ ثُمَّ تِيبَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَمَاتَ كَعْبُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ سَنَةَ خَمْسِينَ فِي إِمَارَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَهُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ابْنُ سَبْعٍ وَسَبْعِينَ سَنَةً

✧ And Ka‘b b. Malik b. Abi Ka‘b b. al-Qayn b. Ka‘b b. Sawwad b. Ghanm b. Ka‘b b. Salamah—he is the poet of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It was said that he was given the kunyah Abu ‘Abd Allah. Ka‘b witnessed Uhud and was wounded there with more than ten wounds, and he was carried off among the slain. He did not witness Badr, but he witnessed the Khandaq and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except Tabuk, for he stayed behind from it. He is one of the three who stayed behind during the expedition of Tabuk and then were forgiven. Ka‘b b. Malik died in the year fifty during the governorship of Mu‘awiyah b. Abi Sufyan, being then seventy-seven years old.
