✧ He narrated to him that his father wrote a letter to the disbelievers of Quraysh while he was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and had witnessed Badr. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Ali and al-Zubayr and said: “Go until you catch up with a woman who has a letter with her, and bring it to me.” They went until they reached her and said: “Give us the letter that is with you,” and they told her that they would not leave until they stripped every garment from her. She said: “Are you not two Muslim men?” They said: “Yes, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us that you have a letter.” When she was certain that she could not escape them, she untied the letter from her head and handed it to them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Hatib and read the letter to him, saying: “Do you recognize this letter?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “What made you do this?” He said: “My children and relatives are there, and I was a bedouin man among you, the people of Quraysh.” Umar said: “Permit me, O Messenger of Allah, to kill Hatib.” The Messenger of Allah said: “No, for he witnessed Badr, and you do not know—perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said: ‘Do whatever you wish, for I have forgiven you.’”
