✧ {And We wrote for him on the Tablets of everything an admonition and a detailed explanation of all things} [Al-A'raf: 145]. He said: Moses thought that all things had been recorded for him just as you see that your scholars have recorded for you everything they record. When Moses reached the seashore, he met the learned man and questioned him. The learned man acknowledged his superior knowledge and did not envy him. Moses said to him, entreating him: "May I follow you so that you teach me of the right guidance you have been taught?" The learned man knew that Moses could not endure his company nor be patient with his knowledge, so he said to him: "Indeed you will not be able to have patience with me. And how can you be patient about what you do not encompass in knowledge?" Moses said, excusing himself: "You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey any of your commands." But he knew that Moses could not endure his company nor be patient with his knowledge, so he said to him: "If you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I mention it to you." Then they boarded the ship and the learned man scuttled it. Scuttling it was pleasing to Allah and displeasing to Moses. Then he met the boy and killed him, which was pleasing to Allah. Then he mentioned part of the story and the speech, and Ibn Abbas did not go beyond that.
