✧ When this verse was revealed: {And those who hoard} gold and silver [Qur’an 9:34], it weighed heavily on the Muslims. ʿUmar said, “I will relieve you of your distress.” He went and said, “O Prophet of God, this verse has weighed heavily on your companions.” He said, “God has only made zakāh obligatory in order to purify what remains of your wealth, and He has only made inheritance obligatory”—and he mentioned a word—“so that it may be for those after you.” He said, “Then ʿUmar exclaimed Allāhu akbar.”
