✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he appointed a man over a raiding party, advised him: "When you meet your enemy from the polytheists, call them to one of three qualities—or three traits—and whichever of them they respond to, accept from them and refrain from them. Then call them to Islam. If they respond to you, accept from them and refrain from them. Then call them to move from their land to the land of the Emigrants, and inform them that if they do so, they will have what the Emigrants have and upon them will be what is upon the Emigrants. If they refuse, then inform them that they will be like the Bedouin Muslims: the judgment of Allah that applies to the Muslims will apply to them, and they will have no share in the fay' and the spoils unless they strive in jihad with the Muslims. If they refuse to enter Islam, then ask them to pay the jizyah. If they do so, accept from them and refrain from them. If they refuse, then seek help from Allah and fight them. And if you besiege the people of a fortress, and they want you to grant them the protection of Allah and the protection of His Prophet, do not grant them the protection of Allah or the protection of His Prophet, but grant them your protection and the protection of your father and the protection of your companions. For if you violate your protection and the protection of your fathers, that is easier for you than violating the protection of Allah and the protection of His Messenger. And if you besiege a fortress and they want you to let them descend upon the judgment of Allah, do not let them descend upon the judgment of Allah, but let them descend upon your judgment, for you do not know whether you will attain the judgment of Allah concerning them or not. Then judge among them as you wish."
