Show the chain

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw phlegm on a wall of the mosque, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a pebble and scraped it off, then said, “When one of you expectorates, let him not expectorate in front of his face or to his right, and let him spit to his left or under his foot.”

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. ʿUqayl, Yūnus, Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah, Yaʿqūb b. ʿAṭāʾ, Ibrāhīm b. Ismāʿīl b. Mujammiʿ, the nephew of al-Zuhrī, Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd and al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd, from Abū Hurayrah and Abū Saʿīd. Maʿmar, Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān, Zakariyyā b. Isḥāq, and Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd (in the narration of Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī) narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd, from Abū Hurayrah alone. Likewise said Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Rāsibī, from Abū Nuʿaym, from Ibn Mujammiʿ. Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd, from Abū Saʿīd alone, and did not mention Abū Hurayrah. Likewise said the reliable memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) among the students of Ibn ʿUyaynah, among them al-Ḥumaydī, Musaddad, Saʿīd b. Manṣūr and Abū Bakr b. Abī Shaybah. ʿAbbās al-Baḥrānī said, from Ibn ʿUyaynah, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibn al-Musayyib, from Abū Hurayrah, and he was not corroborated in this. Ṣāliḥ b. Abī al-Akhḍar said, from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī. Ibrāhīm b. Murrah said, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd and Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. ʿUmar b. Qays said, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, and he added in it "and Ṣafar in its place". Muʿāwiyah b. Yaḥyā al-Ṣadafī said, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, and he brought another wording, namely that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Spitting in the mosque is a sin, and its expiation is burying it." That is not preserved (maḥfūẓ) from al-Zuhrī. What is preserved from him is from Ḥumayd, from Abū Hurayrah and Abū Saʿīd, from the Prophet ﷺ, as we mentioned before.
