✧ While we were sitting around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—or the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting while we were around him, Hammam was unsure—a man entered, faced the qiblah, and prayed. When he finished the prayer, he came and greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “And upon you. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” The man went back and prayed, and we began watching his prayer, not knowing what defect it had. When he finished his prayer, he came and greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, “And upon you. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” Hammam said, “I do not know whether he commanded him that twice or three times.” The man said, “I have not fallen short, so I do not know what you have found defective in my prayer.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The prayer of any of you is not complete until he performs wudu thoroughly as Allah ﷻ commanded him, washing his face and his hands up to the elbows, wiping his head, and his feet up to the ankles. Then he says takbir and praises Allah. Then he recites from the Quran whatever Allah ﷻ has permitted him. Then he says takbir and bows, placing his palms on his knees until his joints are at ease and relaxed, and he says, ‘Allah hears the one who praises Him.’ Then he stands upright until he straightens his back, so that every bone takes its proper place. Then he says takbir and prostrates, pressing his face—Hammam said, and perhaps he said his forehead—to the ground until his joints are at ease and relaxed. Then he says takbir and sits upright on his seat and straightens his back.” He described the prayer in this manner for four rakʿahs until he finished. “The prayer of any of you is not complete until he does that.”

machine translationI asked my father about a hadith narrated by Ḥammād b. Salamah, from Isḥāq b. ʿAbdillāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah, from ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā b. Khallād, from his paternal uncle, without mentioning his father: that a man entered the mosque and prayed while the Prophet ﷷ was sitting, and he mentioned the hadith. It was narrated by Hammām, from Isḥāq b. ʿAbdillāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah, from ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā b. Khallād, from his father, from his paternal uncle Rifāʿah b. Rāfiʿ, from the Prophet ﷺ. My father said: It was also narrated by Sharīk b. ʿAbdillāh b. Abī Namir, Dāwūd b. Qays and Ibn ʿAjlān, from ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā b. Khallād, and they said: from his father, from Rifāʿah. Ḥammād and Muḥammad b. ʿAmr do not say "from his father". The correct version is: from his father, from his paternal uncle Rifāʿah.
