Notes

- Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī
machine translationHis statement, "The ḥadīth is well known and the Companions acted upon it": as for its being well known, it is not meant in the technical sense, but he means its fame among the people. As for the Companions acting upon it, that is not established from any of them. Al-Dāraquṭnī reported it through two weak routes from ʿAlī, may God be pleased with him, and through another route weaker than both from Ibn ʿAbbās.
