ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ بُهْلُولٍ ثنا أَبِي ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ عَنْ فُلَيْحِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ

قُلْتُ لَا يَغْلِبُنِي اللَّيْلَةَ عَلَى الْمَقَامِ أَحَدٌ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى وَضَعَ يَدَهُ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيَّ فَالْتَفَتُّ فَإِذَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُثْمَانُ فَتَنَحَّيْتُ فَافْتَتَحَ الْقُرْآنَ فَقَرَأَهُ فِي رَكْعَةٍ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنَّمَا صَلَّيْتَ رَكْعَةً فَقَالَ هِيَ وِتْرِي

✧ I said: Tonight no one will beat me to the Maqam. Then a man came and placed his hand between my shoulders. I turned and it was the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman. I stepped aside, and he began the Quran and recited it in one rak'ah. I said: O Commander of the Faithful, you prayed only one rak'ah. He said: It is my Witr.
