✧ News of the Prophet’s ﷺ departure reached us while we were in Yemen, so we set out as emigrants to him: I and two brothers of mine, and I was the youngest of them. One of them was Abu Burdah and the other was Abu Ruhm. Either he said, “a few,” or he said, “among fifty-three or fifty-two men from my people.” We boarded a ship, and our ship cast us to the Negus in Abyssinia. There we met Jafar ibn Abi Talib, and we stayed with him until we all arrived together, meeting the Prophet ﷺ when he conquered Khaybar. Some people used to say to us—meaning to the people of the ship—“We preceded you in the Hijrah.” Asma bint Umays, who was among those who had come with us, entered upon Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, as a visitor; she had emigrated to the Negus among those who emigrated. Umar then entered upon Hafsah while Asma was with her. When Umar saw Asma, he said, “Who is this?” She said, “Asma bint Umays.” Umar said, “This Abyssinian woman? This woman of the sea?” Asma said, “Yes.” He said, “We preceded you in the Hijrah, so we have more right to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than you do.” She became angry and said, “No, by Allah. You were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, feeding your hungry and admonishing your ignorant, while we were in a land—or in a place—of distant and hostile people in Abyssinia, and that was for the sake of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. By Allah, I will neither eat food nor drink any drink until I mention what you said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We used to be harmed and afraid, and I will mention that to the Prophet ﷺ and ask him. By Allah, I will not lie, nor deviate, nor add anything to it.”
