✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed one of the two afternoon prayers as two rak'ahs, then gave the salutation. The people who were in a hurry left, saying: "The prayer has been shortened." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood by a pillar and placed his hand on it, and anger was recognizable in his face. Abu Bakr and 'Umar were among the people, but they were too awed to speak to him. Dhu al-Yadayn said: "O Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened or did you forget?" He said: "It has not been shortened, and I do not know that I forgot." He said: "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah." He said to the people, and they said: "He has spoken the truth." He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his place and prayed two rak'ahs, then gave the salutation to his right and to his left, and prostrated two prostrations, and sat for a little while. 'Asim said: Abu Qilabah said: Then he gave the salutation.
