✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ prayed one of the two evening prayers—he said: My strongest assumption is that it was the noon prayer—then he went to a piece of wood in the mosque and placed his hands on it, one over the other. The swiftest of the people departed saying, 'The prayer has been shortened.' Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar, and they were too awed to speak to him. Then a man stood up—either short of hands or long of them—called Dhu al-Yadayn, and said, 'O Messenger of God, has the prayer been shortened or did you forget?' He said, 'It was not shortened and I did not forget.' He said, 'Yes, you forgot.' So he said, 'Has Dhu al-Yadayn spoken the truth?' They said, 'Yes.' Then the Messenger of God ﷺ led us in two rak'ahs, then gave the greeting, then pronounced the takbir and prostrated like his prostration or longer, then raised his head and pronounced the takbir and prostrated like his prostration or longer, then raised his head and pronounced the takbir.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
