✧ What 'Abd al-Rahman al-A'raj narrated from Abu Hurayrah

وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، نَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، نَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ:

لَمْ تَحِلَّ الْغَنَائِمُ لِقَوْمٍ سُودِ الرُّءُوسِ قَبْلَكُمْ، كَانَتْ تَأْتِي نَارٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَتَأْكُلُهَا. فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ بَدْرٍ قَالَ: فَأَسْرَعَ النَّاسُ فِي الْغَنَائِمِ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ: لَوْلا كِتَابٌ مِنَ اللهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ

Translation

✧ War spoils were not lawful for any people with black heads before you. A fire used to come from the sky and consume them. When the day of Badr came, he said: The people hastened to take the spoils, so God sent down: 'Had it not been for a previous ordinance from God, a severe punishment would have touched you for what you took.'
