✧ Seventy thousand of my community will enter Paradise without reckoning; their faces will be like the light of the moon on the night of the full moon. 'Ukkasha b. Mihsan stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me one of them.' He said, 'You are one of them.' Then a man from the Muhajirun, from their best, stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me one of them.' He said, 'Ukkasha has preceded you to it.'

machine translationHis saying "Then another man stood up to him": there is disagreement here over whether he said "Pray for me" or "Am I among them?", as occurred in the previous report. In the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah which follows it, he is "a man from the Anṣār". It has come through a very weak route that he was Saʿd b. ʿUbādah. Al-Khaṭīb narrated it in al-Mubhamāt through Abū Ḥudhayfah Isḥāq b. Bishr al-Bukhārī, one of the weak narrators, by two routes of his, from Mujāhid: that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the expedition of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, he related a long story, in which the Prophet ﷺ said: "The people of Paradise are one hundred and twenty rows; eighty rows of them are my Ummah and forty rows are the rest of the nations. And with these I have seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning." It was asked, "Who are they?" and he mentioned the ḥadīth, in which he said: "O Allah, make ʿUkkāshah one of them." He said: he was martyred after that. Then Saʿd b. ʿUbādah al-Anṣārī stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me one of them," to the end of the ḥadīth. Besides its weakness and its being mursal, this is improbable given the eminence of Saʿd b. ʿUbādah. If it is preserved (maḥfūẓ), perhaps he was another man with the same name as the master of the Khazraj, and the name of his father and his lineage; for among the Companions there is another of that description, who has a ḥadīth in the Musnad of Baqī b. Makhlad. Also among the Companions is Saʿd b. ʿUmārah al-Anṣārī, so perhaps the name of his father was corrupted. His saying "ʿUkkāshah has preceded you in it": the majority of narrators agreed on this, except what occurs in Ibn Abī Shaybah, al-Bazzār and Abū Yaʿlā from the ḥadīth of Abū Saʿīd, who added: "Then another man stood up and said, 'Ask Allah to make me one of them.'" At its end he said: "ʿUkkāshah and his companion have preceded you in it. But if you had asked, I would have said it, and had I said it, it would have been obligatory." In its chain is ʿAṭiyyah, who is weak (ḍaʿīf). The scholars' answers differ on the wisdom behind his saying "ʿUkkāshah has preceded you in it." Ibn al-Jawzī narrated in Kashf al-Mushkil through Abū ʿUmar al-Zāhid that he asked Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. Yaḥyā, known as Thaʿlab, about that, and he said: "He was a hypocrite." Al-Dāraquṭnī likewise transmitted from the judge Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Birtī (with kasrah on the bāʾ, sukūn on the rāʾ, then a tāʾ) that he said: "The second man was a hypocrite, and the Prophet ﷺ was never asked for anything but that he gave it, so he answered him in this way." Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr transmitted from some scholars something like Thaʿlab's statement. Ibn Nāṣir said: "Thaʿlab's statement is preferable to the report of Mujāhid, because its chain is very weak (wāhin)." Al-Suhaylī considered Thaʿlab's statement improbable because of what occurs in the Musnad of al-Bazzār by another route from Abū Hurayrah: "Then a man from the best of the Muhājirūn stood up." Its chain is extremely weak, in addition to contradicting the authentic report that he was from the Anṣār.
