حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ: نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: نَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ جُرَيِّ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ السَّدُوسِيِّ قَالَ:
رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُتْعَةِ، وَعَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ يَأْمُرُ بِهَا فَأَتَيْتُ عَلِيًّا، فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّ بَيْنَكُمَا لَشَرًّا أَنْتَ تَأْمُرُ بِهَا وَعُثْمَانُ يَنْهَى عَنْهَا، فَقَالَ: مَا بَيْنَنَا إِلَّا خَيْرٌ، وَلَكِنْ خَيْرُنَا أَتْبَعُنَا لِهَذَا الدِّينِ

✧ I saw 'Uthman b. 'Affan forbidding mut'ah, and 'Ali b. Abi Talib commanding it. I went to 'Ali and said, 'There is certainly evil between you two: you command it while 'Uthman forbids it.' He said, 'Between us there is nothing but good, but the best of us is the one who follows this religion most closely.'
