✧ A man from the Children of Israel used to lend money to people. A man came to him and said: O so-and-so, lend me six hundred dinars. He said: Yes, where is your guarantor? He said: God is my guarantor. He said: Yes. So he counted out six hundred dinars for him and set a term. The other man traveled by sea with the money to trade with it. God decreed that the term arrived while the other man had not returned, and the sea rose between them. The owner of the money went to the shore to ask about him, and those he asked said: We left him at such-and-such a village. The owner of the money said: O God, I gave it to him only for Your sake. The debtor, when the term fell due, carved out a piece of wood, placed the money inside it, and wrote a letter: From so-and-so to so-and-so: I have delivered your money to my guarantor who guaranteed for me. Then he sealed the mouth of the wood and cast it into the middle of the sea. The sea carried it until it cast it upon the shore. The owner of the money went asking about his companion as he had been asking, and he found the piece of wood. He took it to his family and said: Burn this. The dinars and the letter fell out. He read it and recognized it, and he set a term for the other man. The debtor came after that, and the owner of the money met him and said: O so-and-so, you have been long in coming. He said: Yes. He said: As for me, I delivered it to my guarantor who guaranteed for me, and as for you, here is your money, take it. He said: Your guarantor has paid me in full. Abu Hurayra said: We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ and our clamor and voices grew loud over which of them was more faithful.
