✧ I saw in what the sleeper sees, as if I were at a well, and the people gathered around it. Abu Bakr came and drew a bucket or two buckets, and in his drawing there was weakness, and Allah forgive him. Then Umar came, and it turned in his hand into a large bucket, and I did not see a genius among men excel in his manner of drawing until the people had watered their camels.

machine translationʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Muḥammad b. Bishr al-ʿAbdī narrated it from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar, from Abū Bakr b. Sālim, from Ibn ʿUmar, and he dropped Sālim from the chain. And it was narrated from Maʿmar, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar, from Abū Bakr b. Sālim, from Ibn ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ, another hadith, namely: "I saw as if I were drinking from a large cup filled with milk, then I gave my surplus to ʿUmar." I do not know anyone who narrated it other than Aḥmad b. Asad b. ʿĀṣim, the grandson (son of the daughter) of Mālik b. Mighwal, from Maʿmar. If he memorized it, then he has reported something strange (gharīb) with it. And God knows best.

machine translationAbū Zurʿah said: This is a mistake. It is only ʿUbaydullāh, from Abū Bakr b. Sālim, from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ. I said to Abū Zurʿah: Who is the source of the error? He said: From Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh, and Ibn Ismāʿīl did not know the matter of the hadith.
