✧ Some zanādiqa (heretics) were brought to ʿAlī ؓ. He went out to the market, dug a pit, and burned them with fire. Then he raised his head to the sky and said: God and His Messenger spoke the truth. Then he left until he entered al-Raḥba, and I followed him. When he was about to enter the house, he said: What is the matter with you, O Suwayd? I said: O Commander of the Faithful, a word I heard when you burned those heretics: you said, 'God and His Messenger spoke the truth.' He said: O Suwayd, when you hear me say, 'The Messenger of God ﷺ said,' know that falling from the sky is dearer to me than saying what I did not hear from him. When you see me speak of things like this, it is only something to anger them, or a word like that.
