حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، نَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، نَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ
قَالَ لِقَوْمٍ يَأْتُونَ السُّلْطَانَ: مَاذَا رَأَيْتُمْ مِنْ مُنْكَرٍ مِنْهُ غَيَّرْتُمُوهُ، أَوْ مِنْ مَعْرُوفٍ أَمَرْتُمُوهُ بِهِ ؟ قَالُوا: لَا، وَلَكِنْ إِذَا قَالَ شَيْئًا قُلْنَا: صَدَقَ، وَإِذَا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ قُلْنَا: مَا نَعْلَمُ، قَالَ:كُنَّا نَعُدُّ هَذَا نِفَاقًا، أَوْ مِنَ النِّفَاقِ

✧ He said to people who go to the ruler: 'What evil have you seen from him that you changed, or what good have you enjoined upon him?' They said: 'No, but when he says something we say: He spoke the truth, and when we leave his presence we say: We do not know.' He said: 'We used to consider this hypocrisy, or a form of hypocrisy.'
