✧ I said to 'Ali—while he was conversing with him—: 'People disapprove that you go out in the heat wearing a heavy padded garment, and in winter wearing two light cloaks.' 'Ali said: 'Were you not with us?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Abu Bakr, tied the banner for him, and sent him out. He marched with the people and was defeated. When he reached and returned, he called 'Umar, tied a banner for him, and he marched, then returned defeated with the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger and whom Allah and His Messenger love. Allah will grant victory through him. He is not one to flee." He sent for me and called me. I came to him while I was suffering from ophthalmia and could not see anything. He spat in my eyes and said: "O Allah, spare him the pain of heat and cold." After that, neither heat nor cold harmed me.'
