✧ We went out with our tribe Ghifar, and they used to violate the sacred month. I, my brother Unays, and our mother went out until we came to a maternal uncle of ours who had wealth and good appearance. Our uncle treated us kindly, but his people envied us and said: 'Unays, when you go out, he takes your place with your family.' Our uncle came and told us what was said to him. We said to him: 'As for you, you have spoiled your past kindness, and there will be no gathering for us after this.' So we brought forward our herd, and our uncle covered himself with his cloak weeping. We went on until we were in a valley near Makkah. Unays competed over our herd and went to a soothsayer, and he came back to us with our herd and the like of it along with it. I had prayed, O son of my brother, for three years before I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: I said: 'To whom?' He said: 'To Allah.' I said: 'Where did you turn?' He said: 'Wherever Allah directed me. I prayed at night until, when it was the time before dawn, I threw myself down as if I were a garment until the sun rose over me.' Unays said to me: 'I am going to Makkah, so suffice me until I come to you.' He went and was slow in returning to me. Then he came, and I said: 'What delayed you?' He said: 'I met in Makkah a man upon your religion who claims that Allah sent him.' He said: I said: 'What do people say about him?' He said: 'They say: a poet, a soothsayer. I have heard the speech of soothsayers, and it is not their speech. I have placed his speech upon the modes of poetry, and it does not fit upon the tongue of anyone.' Abu Dharr said: 'O son of my brother, Unays was one of the poets.' He said: 'By Allah, he is truthful.' He said: I said: 'Then suffice me until I go to Makkah.' He said: 'Yes, but be wary of the people of Makkah, for they are hostile to him.' He said: So I went and asked a man among them: 'Where is the one they call the Sabian?' He said: So he pointed at me and said: 'Sabian! Sabian!' He said: So the people of the valley pelted me with every stone and bone until I fell unconscious. When I regained consciousness, I was like a standing idol. I went to Zamzam and washed the blood off myself and drank from its water. I stayed, O son of my brother, thirty days and nights, having no food or drink except Zamzam, and I became fat until the folds of my belly became creased, and I did not feel any weakness of hunger on my liver. He said: While I was one night on a moonlit, bright night, Allah struck the ears of the people of Makkah, so none of them was circumambulating the House except two women calling upon Yasaf and Na'ilah. I put out my head and said: 'Marry one of them to the other.' By Allah, they did not stop. Then they came upon me while they were calling upon Yasaf and Na'ilah, and I said: 'A thing like a piece of wood, except that I am not called by a kunyah.' They went off wailing and saying: 'If only one of our people were here.' The first to meet them was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr, coming down from the mountain. They said: 'The Sabian is between the Ka'bah and its veils.' He said: 'What did he say to you?' They said: 'He said to us a word that fills the mouth.' He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and began with the Black Stone and touched it, then circumambulated the House seven times. I reached him while he and his companion were there, and I was the first to greet him with the greeting of Islam. He said: 'And upon you and the mercy of Allah. Who are you?' I said: 'A man from Banu Ghifar.' He said: So he placed his hand on his forehead. I said to myself: He disliked that I attributed myself to Ghifar, so I went to remove his hand from his forehead, but his companion prevented me, and he was more knowledgeable about him than I. He said: 'How long have you been here?' I said: 'For thirty days and nights.' He said: 'What has been your food?' I said: 'I had no food except the water of Zamzam, and I became fat until the folds of my belly became creased, and I did not feel any weakness of hunger on my liver.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed it is blessed, and it is a food that nourishes.' Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah, let me have the honor of feeding him tonight.' He said: 'Yes.' He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went, Abu Bakr went, and I went with them. He opened a door for us and gave us a handful of Ta'if raisins - I think he said: a handful. That was the first food I ate there. He said: I stayed for some time, then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'I have been directed to a land of palm trees, which I think is only Yathrib. Will you convey from me to your people, that Allah may benefit them through you?' He said: So I went until I came to my brother Unays. He said to me: 'What did you do?' I said: 'I have embraced Islam and believed.' He said to me: 'I have no desire to turn away from your religion, so I have embraced Islam and believed.' Then we came to our mother and presented Islam to her, and she said: 'I have no desire to turn away from the religion of you two, so I have embraced Islam and believed.' Then we set out until we came to our tribe Ghifar and presented Islam to them. Half of them embraced Islam, and the remaining half said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrives in Madinah, we will embrace Islam.' Ima' - meaning Ibn Rahadah al-Ghifari - used to lead them in prayer, and he was their chief. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah, the rest of them embraced Islam. Then our brothers from Aslam came and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we embrace Islam upon the same terms as Ghifar embraced Islam.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Ghifar - may Allah forgive her, and Aslam - may Allah grant her peace.'
