✧ I had some dates, so I sold them in the market for dates of better quality at half the measure of it. Then I brought them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "I have not seen dates of better quality than these today. Where are these from, O Bilal?" I told him what I had done. He said, "Go and return it to its owner, take your dates, and sell them for wheat or barley, then buy with that from these dates." So I did that. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Dates for dates, like for like; wheat for wheat, like for like; barley for barley, like for like; salt for salt, like for like; gold for gold, like for like; silver for silver, weight for weight. Whatever is extra is usury."

In al-Ṭabarānī it has chains, some of them from the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar from Bilāl, abridged from this, and its men are trustworthy (thiqāt); and some of them from the narration of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb from Bilāl, similar to the first, and its chain is weak (ḍaʿīf).
