حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بَزِيعٍ، نَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ
أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ، وَأُعْطِيتُ مِنْهُ مَا لَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَفُوقَنِي أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ - إِمَّا قَالَ: بِشِسْعِ نَعْلٍ، وَإِمَّا [ بِشِرَاكِ نَعْلٍ ] - أَفَمِنَ الْكِبْرِ ذَاكَ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، وَلَكِنَّ الْكِبْرَ مَنْ بَطِرَ الْحَقَّ وَغَمَصَ النَّاسَ

✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “I love beauty, and I have been given of it such that I would not like anyone among people to surpass me—either he said: by a shoestring, or by a sandal strap. Is that arrogance?” He said: “No, but arrogance is rejecting the truth and despising people.”
