While ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān was circumambulating the House, he said: "May God fight Ibn al-Zubayr, how he lies about the Mother of the Believers! He says: I heard her say: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Were it not that your people have only recently left disbelief, I would demolish the House and add to it from the Ḥijr, for your people fell short in the construction.'" Then al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Rabīʿah said: "Do not say this, O Commander of the Believers, for I heard the Mother of the Believers narrate this." He said: "Had I heard it before I demolished it, I would have left it on the construction of Ibn al-Zubayr."
