The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word on the morning of ʿĀshūrāʾ to the villages of the Anṣār around Medina: "Whoever has begun the day fasting, let him complete his fast, and whoever has begun the day not fasting, let him complete the rest of his day." She said: So after that we used to fast it, and we would make our young children fast too, and we would make them a toy of wool, and we would take them to the mosque. If one of them cried for food, we would give him that toy until it was the time of breaking the fast.
