Whoever takes charge of an orphan's wealth, let him count the years for him, and when he hands over his wealth to him, let him inform him of the zakāh due on it. If he wishes, he may pay the zakāh, and if he wishes, he may leave it.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis is a weak (ḍaʿīf) report, for Mujāhid did not meet Ibn Masʿūd, so it is broken (munqaṭiʿ), and Layth b. Abī Sulaym is weak (ḍaʿīf) according to the hadith scholars.

  • M. ibn Ḥibbān al-Bustī

machine translationHe was one of the devout worshippers, meaning Layth b. Abī Sulaym, but he became confused (ikhtalaṭa) at the end of his life, so that he did not know what he was narrating. He would reverse chains of transmission and raise mursal reports to the Prophet. Yaḥyā b. al-Qaṭṭān, Ibn Mahdī, Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn abandoned him.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationLikewise Ibn ʿUlayyah and others narrated it from Layth. Abū ʿAbdillāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us: Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb narrated to us: al-Rabīʿ b. Sulaymān informed us: He said: al-Shāfiʿī said, in a debate that took place between him and one who disagreed with him, and his answer concerning this report: "Yet you claim that this is not established from Ibn Masʿūd on two grounds: one, that it is broken (munqaṭiʿ), and that the one who narrated it is not a reliable memorizer (ḥāfiẓ)." The Shaykh said: The aspect of its being broken is that Mujāhid did not meet Ibn Masʿūd, and the narrator who is not a reliable memorizer is Layth b. Abī Sulaym, whom the scholars of hadith have declared weak. It is also narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, except that Ibn Lahīʿah is alone in its chain, and Ibn Lahīʿah is not to be used as evidence. And Allah knows best.

  • Shafiʿī

  • Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn

machine translationAl-Shāfiʿī declared it weak (ḍaʿīf) on two grounds: first, that it is broken (munqaṭiʿ), because Mujāhid did not meet Ibn Masʿūd; second, that Layth b. Abī Sulaym is weak (ḍaʿīf).

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationAl-Shāfiʿī found it defective (muʿall) due to the break in the chain (inqiṭāʿ) and because Layth is not a reliable memorizer (ḥāfiẓ).
