The Prophet ﷺ passed by a grave in which someone was being buried and said: "Whose grave is this?" They said: "The grave of so-and-so." He said: "Why did you not inform me?" - He said - They had regarded his matter as small and insignificant. So he prayed over him after he had been buried and said: "These graves are filled with darkness for their occupants, and indeed Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, illuminates them through my prayer over them."

machine translationImam Aḥmad said: The prayer at the grave has been reported from the Prophet ﷺ through six routes, all of them good (ḥasan). Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said: Rather, through nine, all of them good (ḥasan), and he gave them all with their chains in his Tamhīd: from the hadith of Sahl b. Ḥunayf, Abū Hurayrah, ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, Ibn ʿAbbās and Zayd b. Thābit, these five concerning his prayer for the poor woman; and Saʿd b. ʿUbādah, concerning the prayer of the Chosen One over Umm Saʿd a month after her burial; and the hadith of al-Ḥuṣayn b. Waḥwaḥ, concerning his prayer, upon him be blessings and peace, at the grave of Ṭalḥah b. al-Barāʾ, then he raised his hands and said: "O Allah, let Ṭalḥah meet You laughing to You and You laughing to him"; and the hadith of Abū Umāmah b. Thaʿlabah, that he ﷺ returned from Badr after the mother of Abū Umāmah had died, and he prayed over her; and the hadith of Anas, that he ﷺ prayed over a woman after she had been buried, which could refer to the poor woman or to another.
